#55 IT Infrastructure - bring up to date: change request accepted

Update old language to reflect current views on infrastructure around cloud services etc.

From Australian Public Sector SFIA Cyber Security and Digital Workshop Oct12:

  • Suggest the wording ‘all equipment within wide and local area networks’ is old language and that Infrastructure now days includes cloud services like IaaS and PaaS. Suggest this whole sentence be changed to “The operation and control of the IT infrastructure (including on premises and off-premises infrastructure)…”
  • Suggest ITOP4 to change from ‘network’ to ‘service’ such as: ‘Uses service management tools to determine service usage and performance statistics.’ Similar change suggested for ITOP3.

This is an important areas to discuss:
We have to cater for:
- the users of a service (who may not consider old terminology appropriate)
- and the provides of the service where they may need to consider both the old and the new

I agree with both the proposed changes. The first point is addressed well by the proposed wording, which would work resonate with managers of traditional as well as modern (cloud/hybrid) infrastructure environments. The second point has long been an issue for me. Customers want to include ITOP in their skills profiles but it keeps referring to the "network", when it means "infrastructure". I usually get them to add a supporting note to this effect. I prefer "infrastructure" to "service" in this context. For example System Center is an infrastructure management product, not a service management product.
