#5 Need To Recognise the Roles of Product Owners: change request accepted

The rise of iterative and agile based approach to solution and service delivery has evolved into the cross over of the business sponsor roles and technical delivery assurance practitioners into Product Development owners, specialist and managers

I am not sure where this will fit, but it could also be under "Development and Implementation". While "Relationship and Engagement" aspect is covered under "Sales & Marketing --> Product Management"

Other possible skills to consider are

  • Product Design
  • Digital Design
  • Product Development

What we decided

Accepted. There are a number of impacts related to this change request. See "What we Changed" section for details.

What we changed

Product management (PROD) refreshed at all levels.

Business Analysis (BUAN) and Requirements defintion and management (REQM)

  • Both have been updated to be inclusive of adoption and adaptation of different  approaches based on the context of the work and selecting appropriately from plan-driven/predictive approaches or more adaptive (iterative and agile) approaches.

User centred design is a new sib-category with 4 new / refreshed skills

  • User research (URCH)
  • User experience analysis (UNAN)
  • User experience design (HCEV)
  • User experience evaluation (USEV)

Role of PO is ongoing active sponsorship of change and the realisation of business value. As a PO I prioritise work for my product team that inherently has to include decisions balancing the need for business value and tech debt/sustainability of the technologies and IT service - this role differs dramatically from traditional waterfall deliveries and is focused on long term product and management of risk as well as value.

I understand the request given the move to more iterative product development and the need for product management. Need to ensure that product management is also covered adequately as this role is now very common.

Some other points we need to cover
- Internal product management vs external product management
- product owners and product managers - getting beyond the role titles to what the underlying skills are
- distinctions between product marketing and product management
- customer research and customer experience through to user experience - have we got a coherent set of skills
- eliciting customer product requirements and how that compares to SFIA's BUAN and REQM skills

Change Request raised on behalf of itSMF International via Barry Corless (Director - itSMF International)

SFIA seems to insist on using product / service as if they are the same thing. They are not and the activities in managing / building are similar but distinct. This should be addressed particularly around the Agile / Scrum role of Product Ownership (a new skill?)
