#1305 NTDS - Additional NTDS4 Skills: change request pending

Add level 4 NTDS skill for network design. This is required for a major network company that specialises in design and management.

NTDS starts at level 5, which is too high for the many staff members who are employed by my client who conduct network design activities at an element level. The suggested NTDS4 skill combines elments of system design 4 (DESN4) and NTDS5. We did an assessment of 100 staff and 70% selected NTDS4 skill as defined below.

Designs specific network components using agreed architectures, design standards, patterns and methodology. Contributes to alternative network architectures, networking topologies and design options. Creates multiple design views to address the concerns of the different stakeholders of the network and to handle both functional and non-functional requirements. Reviews, verifies and improves own network designs against specifications using supplied user/system interfaces, including validation and error correction procedures, processing rules, access, security and audit controls. Contributes to the identification of associated risks and the development of recovery routines and contingency procedures.

Thanks Simon - that's very helpful. The description of NTDS as a skill hasn't changed much over the different versions of SFIA. Did you have any feedback on the other levels or the overall skill description.

I think the skill works well and my client liked the description. IO would not change that too much, just add level 4 and maybe level 3...

It has been commented to me before (from a major manufacturer/installer of telco equipment) that NTDS starts too high (NTDS5) - and that certainly it should go down to NTDS4. Your suggestion and input is great. Their suggestion was that it should go down to L3 - more configuration rather than design. Any thoughts on this?

There is also the suggestion that a number of skills, and NTDS might be one, where it would be beneficial to take the level down to 3 for those individuals that serve an apprenticeship in this area.

Yes, that would would work too Ian. We did look at level 3, but did not want to take too many liberties.
